Better carbohydrate quality starts with fibre

Better carbohydrate quality starts with fibre

Lancet reviews combined observational studies and clinical trials on fibre and whole grains. Higher fibre intake was linked with better health outcomes; trials also showed favourable changes in some risk factors.

Several benefits were prominent around 25–29 g of daily fibre, with possible further benefit at higher intakes. One product cannot stand in for an entire dietary pattern.

Practical suggestion: include legumes, vegetables and oats across varied meals rather than treating all carbohydrates as equivalent.

How to interpret the result

Some evidence is observational; associations alone do not prove causation for every outcome.
