Fermented foods and the gut microbiome

Fermented foods and the gut microbiome

A small study compared high-fibre and high-fermented-food diets in healthy adults, with 18 participants per group.

The fermented-food group increased microbial diversity and reduced inflammatory markers. The fibre group responded differently; this does not mean fibre lacks value.

Practical suggestion: consider a tolerated fermented food within a varied diet. Findings about foods cannot be transferred directly to any probiotic capsule.

How to interpret the result

A small study of biomarkers, not proof of treatment for a digestive disorder.
